Accounting Major and Minor - Undergraduate Curricular Updates

ACTIVE

Effective Start Date: 01/2009 End Date: Current

Accounting Major or Minor Student: Please be advised effective Winter 2009 (200930) students must earn a C or higher in any class that is a prerequisite to any upper division accounting classes you will be taking as part of the accounting minor or major program. All students pursuing a major or minor in accounting earning a C- or lower in these prerequisites will not be allowed to enroll in the upper division classes and students must also earn a C or higher in all accounting upper level classes in order to graduate.

1. ACT 3030 Cost Management

2. ACT 3050 Intermediate Accounting I

3. ACT 3060 Intermediate Accounting II

4. ACT 3070 Intermediate Accounting III

5. TXX 3110 Federal Taxation I

6. ACT 4010 Advanced Accounting

7. ACT 4050 Accounting Information Systems

8. ACT 4210 Auditing

The rationale for this change is students are earning in some cases D grades for courses, but that is not really preparing them for the next step. For example, a D in ACT 3050 gives the student barely any knowledge which would likely result in the student doing worse in 3060.

Effective Start Date:08/01/2007 End Date:Current

In response to student feedback and performance, the curriculum has been modified to allow students to engage in more in-depth analysis of Intermediate Accounting through the development of a three course sequence. The addition of ACT 3070, Intermediate Accounting III, will achieve this goal. Subsequently, TXX 3120, Federal Taxation II will be eliminated from the program requirements (as outlined below).

Due to the complexity and timing of this change, students who are currently enrolled in the program may experience modifications to their original curriculum. The required credits for degree completion, 120 will not be altered. However, there may be substitutions to your curriculum, depending on your progress within the program. Please refer to the outline below to determine the changes that will affect you.

  1. Any student who has already taken both ACT 3050 and ACT 3060 will not be impacted. The curriculum you have been working toward remains unchanged which includes completing TXX 3120.
  2. Any student who has not yet taken both ACT 3050 and ACT 3060 will be exempt from TXX 3120. In place of this course, you will take ACT 3070, Intermediate III.
  3. Any student who has not yet taken ACT 3050 and ACT 3060, yet has completed TXX 3120 will be exempt from ACT 4010, Accounting Information Systems, and take ACT 3070 in its place.

It is anticipated ACT 3070 will be offered for the first time in Fall 2008 for both PALS and Career students. If students require ACT 3070 earlier than planned for graduation purposes, tutorial courses can be established.
