Subject: Important message regarding lead professor course delivery

Hello Master's Students,

Last June, we announced a new competency-based learning model which began phasing into many courses offered by the Huizenga School. This model offers two instructors per course skillful at blending academic theory with real-world application. Online technology via the Blackboard 9.1 learning platform is used to assist in delivery regardless of course format. Course content is conveniently provided to meet the needs of working professionals and full time students. This is the Lead Professor Model (LPM). Here is how it works. LPM courses at the bachelor's and master's level will have two educational professionals. The two professionals are called the Lead Professor (LP) and the Instructional Specialist (IS). The LP is an expert in their field with an appropriate doctoral degree and will often be a fulltime faculty member of the Huizenga School. The IS is also an expert, possessing a master's degree or higher in an appropriate field and significant professional experience in the course content area. Working as partners in your academic journey, the Lead Professor and Instructional Specialist will deliver the best of traditional academic theory and professional real-world application.

The role of the LP is to:

  • Provide a series of content area videos which may be accessed by students 24/7
  • Create custom materials complementing the video lectures
  • Communicate directly with students via class visits, email, chat, or discussion board postings
  • Create for the IS all instructional materials and exams, grading rubrics, and lesson plans
  • Serve as your instructor of record for the course while providing leadership and guidance to the IS
  • Determine and record all student grades for the course

The role of the IS is to:

  • Lead weekly or bi-weekly (depending upon delivery format) discussions using face to face, Internet, or other communication methods
  • Use a wide range of teaching strategies to enhance and facilitate learning following content videos and other supplementary course materials
  • Serve as the primary student contact for daily class-related matters such as group assignments, Q&A, assignment guidance, and other course-specific support

The LPM began in Summer 2010 in the master's programs. Ultimately, over 100 course subjects could utilize this enhanced model of learning. For Winter 2011, the following courses will be utilizing this model: FINP 5008 Business Finance MGT 5012 21st Century Management Practices MGT 5015 Legal, Ethical, and Social Values of Business HRM 5030 Managing Human Resources ACT 5060 Accounting from Decision Makers FIN 5080 Applying Managerial Finance MGT 5090 Entrepreneurial and Strategic Thinking OPS 5095 Service Operations Management

Note that the LPM will require the use of online content delivery via Blackboard 9.1 regardless of course format. If you are in one of these LPM courses, we recommend you become familiar with Blackboard now. We are confident you will enjoy this new learning model and thank you for being a student at the Huizenga School of Nova Southeastern University.
