Notifying Students Regarding Academic Status

When discussing options with students that are in probation, suspension or facing dismissal status, students may be looking for a way to circumvent the system, or to use your words to get buy-in for requests for exception when speaking to faculty and program office.

For example:

A student may come to you explaining all the many reasons they had to have a C in a class at the end of last term and now decides to contest the grade. Student may tell you a complex story hoping to gain your support (albeit some complex crises do occur and as always we will investigate). While on the call or appointment, you may have provided examples of many scenarios, including perhaps working with the professor. As a result, student goes to the professor and to program office stating that “you” counseled them to solicit a change of grade.

To avoid this situation, please reiterate to students that all grades are final. Remind students that they should be in communication with their professors throughout the term. Communication should not initiate at the end of the term or (in some cases) months after grades are posted.
